"The return policy affects our commission, and it really isn't fair to the employees that Nordstrom will take back worn clothes without tags, and then we get accounted for that transaction."

"The management at Nordstrom is outstanding. I never had a problem with any managers."

"I like meeting new people and being around fashion. Also, I like it when I can feel like I've really helped someone and they appreciate it."

"Be clear about your career goals, and be willing to give up healthcare benefits so you can meet the sales per hour goals needed to be promoted. You often need to stay even if it's slow, just so you can meet the number of hours required to have healthcare."

What don't you like about working at Nordstrom?

"I often feel that the level of expectations about reaching out to customers are not taken seriously by most employees, because the expectations are excessive and would probably turn off many customers."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"I would do more to reward people for performance, based on other things besides ratings based on sales per hour goals. It is a very flawed system for evaluating an employee's performance."

"I like the entrepreneurial feel, variety each day because of dealing with customers, and that it is competitive."

"Know why you want to work for Nordstrom as opposed to any other retail store, and understand the balance between teamwork and competitive individuality."

"Co-workers were highly competitive and territorial. Customers were often very demanding, due to perceived importance."

"Try to set guidelines about competition between sales people, as many were overcompetitive to the point of rudeness."

"I like the coworkers, employee benefits, team-working, individual goals, busy atmosphere, and the money."

"Customers come first. Don't focus on competing with the other sales associates."

"I didn't enjoy working with customers, the messy stockroom, and the unpredictable schedule."

"I would be friendlier to employees and push them in the right direction without being rude."

"Be big! Show a lot of personality. If you want to make the big bucks, work in shoes."

"In my experience, when someone has a preconceived notion about you, it never goes away, even if others see you in a positive light. I'm sure this is true in many businesses. It's just a little harder when so many companies' leaders are women. Women have had such a hard time getting ahead in their careers, that they look at every woman as a competitor."

"I think some of the upper level management still don't connect with the sales force on the floor. They speak the inverted pyramid, but don't reach out enough to learn what the customer really needs."

"I like the great people and great work environment. The more you sell, the more you make."

"Have a strong customer service background, and clear communication skills."

"I dislike commission with no set salary, little opportunity to grow, and working weekends."

"Management needs to focus on needs of the team over needs of the individual."

"The ongoing training classes were informative and relevant, with great team-building exercises."

"I wouldn't bother unless you like to get paid very little, work very hard, and be treated like crap."

What don't you like about working at Nordstrom?

"I disliked ridiculous sales quotas to meet with no sales traffic to reach said goals, talking down to you like a toddler, and being reprimanded for other people's drama constantly. The manager always shifted blame from herself onto the other sales staff. There were ridiculous mood swings from the manager and assistant manager."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Get rid of the egomaniac upper level management staff who doesn't know how to deal with staff below them."
