Overview National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is a U.S. government agency which promotes research, science, establishment and coordination of standards, and advancement of technologies related to measurement and technological standards. Established as the National Bureau of Standards in 1901, NIST employs over 2,700 at its headquarters in Gaithersburg, Maryland, nearly 370 in Boulder, Colorado, and about 16 in Charleston, South Carolina.

NIST provides laboratory environments with specialized equipment, research opportunities, and educational programs. It hosts several thousand as visiting researchers and engineers, manufacturing specialists, and staff.
