Murray State University is a tax-supported public university located in southwestern Kentucky near the Tennessee border. The institution is in the only public university in Kentucky to be named a top regional university by U.S. News & World Report for more than 20 years in a row. Based in Murray, Kentucky, the school enrolls about 10,000 students.

The university was established as Murray State Normal School in 1923, after the Kentucky General Assembly decided to open two new schools to meet a growing need for teacher training in the state. After several name changes, the institution became Murray State University in 1966. Today, the school has five academic colleges, an agricultural school and a nursing school. Murray State also has regional campuses in Paducah, Madisonville, Hopkinsville and Henderson.
