"McMaster-Carr is a great place to work with regard to compensation, but the overall experience leaves a lot to be desired. Although there is not a lot of red tape for a large company, it's very conservative and has little need to move quickly; thus, projects often do not move as quickly as you'd like due to a tendency to meet and discuss every aspect of a project. This conservatism extends to the workplace environment and lifestyle as well. You also have little ability to steer your career."

"Great company with great benefits. The work environment can be stressful and very-high paced. Starting pay is good with yearly raises. Don't recommend staying as a lifer, too physical."

McMaster-Carr Employee

"I've worked for McMaster Carr for about 2 years. I was skeptical about accepting their offer (because of all the bad reviews) but I decided to try it anyway. This was a bad idea in retrospect but a good learning experience. McMaster Carr demands perfection from every employee and will fire those that make a single mistake (management included). I still come to work every day and have no clue if I'm on the verge of getting a bonus or being fired. Management is taught to look down on everyone else. Almost everyone is afraid to challenge the status quo (abusing employees). The two management trainees that did stand up to management were promptly fired. You are never allowed to take sick days and you work many more hours than advertised. I recently read a book on Amazon called McMaster Carr: The Interview Process and Work Experience. I can't comment on the current hiring process but the description of the culture of fear is spot on. Think carefully before coming here. I feel trapped but don't have many meaningful skills now, and it's hard to find another job."
