Overview Marquette University is a private Jesuit university located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It was founded by John Martin Henni in 1881. The university bears the name of Father Jacques Marquette, a missionary and explorer from the 17th century. The school was first called Marquette College and its initial mission was to provide an affordable Catholic education to immigrants from Germany. It received full university status in 1907. Marquette became known to be the first Catholic university to be coeducational, when it began admitting women in 1909.

There are currently 12,002 students at Marquette. Various undergraduate and graduate programs are offered, such as business administration, accounting, law, medicine, nursing and dentistry. The university also provides programs for working adults who wish to upgrade their skills or change careers.
