Management consultants play an important outside role for companies. These people are generally brought in to analyze different companies. They take a look at the management structure to determine how a company might become more efficient. They will make recommendations on various things that a company might do to improve its prospects.
Skillset: A consultant will need to have very good analytical skills. Much of the job requires these people to do some number crunching. They must also be able to communicate their recommendations to the people in power. Because these people are often making unpopular calls, they have to have decently tough skin to do the job.
Education: Management consultants will usually have degrees from good schools. Some might go on to get an MBA from a top university. For the most competitive firms, these degrees are a must. Generally speaking, finance, economics and management are the most popular ways to go.
Career Path: Some people will get consultancy positions right out of college if they have attended the right school. Others will go into business and develop reputations for success in management. It largely depends upon how well the person does in school. There are many paths to this position.
