"Every job has its ups and downs, and you just gotta do what you have to do to get paid and make a living for yourself and your family."

Machine Operator at Technimark
in Asheboro, NC

"Since I have worked as a maintenance mechanic for over 16 years and was cut because of downsizing, I really do not enjoy being an operator that much. However it was all I could find at the time. That being said I don't like being stuck in one spot all the time. I prefer to move around working on different things and tasks."

"It's fulfilling to see a blank part turn into a finished product. Can potentially learn new things from other machinists. That is something I try to do. Ask what others would do to run more efficiently. It can get boring running the same product."

Machine Operator at Milwaukee Gear
in Milwaukee, WI

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"A dissapointing end to what should have been a promising career."

What do you like about working at Milwaukee Gear?

"The benefits and pay are qquite good when compared to what most machine shops will give you."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"I would really only apply here if you have years of machining experience. Not the place to get your foot in the door."

What don't you like about working at Milwaukee Gear?

"I was trained for a job with this company through WRTP/Big Step. There were 16 graduates with my class. I had to interview with all supervisors with the company before I started working, and I got the feeling that opinions in the company were divided about the partnership between Milwaukee Gear and WRTP. Upon seeing that I had an extensive computer background, one supervisor said in a really snarky tone So then why don't you go work for Pixar. I cannot tell you how hard it was not to snap at him. During training I was partnered with a trainer who didn't like the influx of new workers who had little to no experience. He was overly sarcastic, arrogant, and would dissapear for long periods of time. I was then paired up with another longtime employee who worked and spoke way too quicklyto learn from. This guy was also known throughout the companyfor having atrocious people skills. The department lead man could have cared less about whether I succeeded or failed. He was seemingly more concerned with his upcoming retirement, his regimen of vitamin supplements, and his tuesday golf outings. I brought my concerns to hr, but was told I'm ' doing fine for someone new to CNC machining.' 14 months after I started I was let go due to being made the scapegoat for a screw up that was initiated by 1st shift. The person in hr who told me I was doing fine earlier was now telling me that I'm 'just not mechanically inclined'. Now as a father to a small child, and with a mortgage to pay, I am forced to make a career change."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"If you're going to have people training, make sure they know about it prior to be paired up with a new worker.Better yet, ASK them first. Otherwise you guys are only setting somebody up for failure. Also be mindful of what supervisors are spending money on. Our dept was always short of indicators, yet our supervisor spent two grand on janitorial style cleaning carts which ultimately ended up being pushed into a corner to collect dust. Oh, there was a book written about building civilized workplaces that was written by Robert Sutton. I can't put the title here as it is a bit explicit, but a Google search will bring it up. Perhaps you should read it and learn."
