"I love the flexibility of my job, the encouragement to explore new technologies and apply them to the Libraries. I've been actively involved in creating a social media platform for the libraries. It's been fun creating shared Pinterest boards, loading animoto videos into vimeo, and using roki. I am able to keep up with my field and encouraged to attend and present at professional development events and conferences. I hate that when folks think of librarians they still think of card catalogs and printed books. Librarians are now managing electronic technology, fighting for access with the digital divide, figuring out site licenses and authentication. We don't get any respect for being technology savvy or early adopters. For that reason I may stop fighting the good librarian fight and go back to my previous life as a software developer."

"I love that I get to work with other students and be helpful. I have learned a lot about researching and how to retrieve the tools that are necessary for any project. I do feel, however, that I am not challenged enough."

"I enjoyed working with the patrons of the library from children to older adults as well as the ESL adult students, the only thing I didn't like about the library was the low hours and the pay cut, as well as no opportunity for growth or promotion, it wasn't a job you could live off of."

Librarian at Hennepin Technical College
in Minneapolis, MN

What do you like about working at Hennepin Technical College?

"I love helping people and the variety of my responsibilities."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Get to know the library system well before interviewing. HCL hires very few people at the moment, so you need to make yourself stand out. Get to know not only the culture of the library but spend time in our libraries (especially the branch where you are interviewing) to get to know the patrons. Focus on your service to the patrons in your interview answers. If this isn't your focus, HCL is probably not right for you."

What don't you like about working at Hennepin Technical College?

"I worry that our budget will be slashed and we will be forced to reduce the level of service we give to our patrons (through reduced hours, fewer new materials, less programming, etc.)."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"As a large library system, we are sometimes slow to try new ideas. I would encourage more innovation and empower individual branch libraries to test out pilot programs. The best programs could be adopted system-wide."

What do you like about working at Marian University?

"I do not like working at this place. I do get paid but not well."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Do not take a job here unless you have a family, you will not make any friends at work or in town, and you will probably need a spouse who makes good money because your salary will probably barely make up for all of the nonsense you have to put up with."

What don't you like about working at Marian University?

"I am surrounded by idiots. I hate Fond du Lac."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"I would care more about educating students and less about getting students enrolled even if that means that there are fewer but better-prepared students."

What do you like about working at Cornell University?

"Ithaca, student energy, perks, some nice people and sometimes some fun and interesting work."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Get the back story if you can. Expect to be consolidated out of general jobs that exist in multiple units that could be managed centrally."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Establish a culture of accountability (for getting work done and for how we treat each other), develop career paths for high performers, be more flexible about part time work."

Librarian at Littler Mendelson
in San Francisco, CA

What do you like about working at Littler Mendelson?

"Good office culture, good benefits, pleasant co-workers. Management friendly and approachable."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"This is a solidly good place to work. Consider whether you feel you'd be a good fit within your department -- in a company this large, the people in your immediate group are vital."

What don't you like about working at Littler Mendelson?

"I wish there were more training for my position. It would be great if the pay structure were more clear (i.e.how much someone at my level gets paid, how much of a raise I can expect). Sometimes the work is overwhelming, and there's nothing I can do about it -- there are people I can ask for help, but they're often overwhelmed too."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"My immediate boss is great -- she's hands on, yet gives us the space to do things our own way. I don't have much contact with the larger management structure."

in Seattle, WA

What do you like about working at Serials Solutions?

"It's not the Borg--everyone's unique. People are very accepting of all comers."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"A balance of soft skills and tech skills are valued, since customer service is key."

What don't you like about working at Serials Solutions?

"A lot of positions feel like dead ends. There's drastically different skill levels among the same team. Am I getting paid the same as people who are so much less skilled than I am"

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Eliminate people who are just taking up space. Too much deadwood."

What don't you like about working at University of Manitoba?

"Resistance to change, lack of interest in learning new things, and a focus on staff comfort rather than on students."

What suggestions do you have for management?
