The Journal News Employee

"On The Decline"

What do you like about working at The Journal News?

"The Benefits Package and the handling of my severance package was very good. It was good to experience the inner-workings of a large organization. I now have perspective of what I want in a job. A few real solid people exist in this organization. I enjoyed helping out at Special Events that the Journal News planned. This was a shining light in a sea of darkness."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"If you have a dynnamic personality and can developadvertising plans and locate key customers, you might be able to work something at least short term as an Account Executive. There may be some worthwhile opportuniteis in the News Deparment. The other departments are likely not hiring. If for some reason these other areas have a job, I would pass."

What don't you like about working at The Journal News?

"The structure of the Journal News and most especially Gannett is doomed for failure. Too much red tape and unnecessary details that mean very little in reaching the bottom line. The systems conversion at The Journal News was planned in a disorganized manner without any regard for the workload of the end users. Just the idea of The Journal News using their own mistake ridden proprietary software system for advertising billing isntead of an industry wide system defies any logic for finding an expert in managing systems. There are so many systems problems and antiquated procedures at The Journal News and Gannett that nearly every employee is set up for failure and rapid burnout. Fire Killing reigns supreme at the Journal News and process improvement is slow at best. The one Vice President who made a difference was inpersonally let go in the many layoffs. Many of the key players at the Journal News and Gannett Corporate are poor goal setters and others merely pass the blame instead of solving problems."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Focus on investing into the few good parts of the business spcifically online, events, and profitabe technological savvy products. Embrace technology and the new school of doing business and cut thru the red tape and bureauracy and simplify procedures so end users can complete tasks without annoying detail that means very little. A complete overhaul is needed as the overall mindset of management needs to change 360 degrees. The Advertising VP seems like a good one and this is a start. The Publisher is at least approachable. However, there are many critical pieces in the Finance and IT Departments at both The Journal News and Gannett Corporate that need to change. I think this will happen but its questionable if The Journal or Gannett will be the place to advertise in the near future especially with their exorbitant advertising rates."
