Overview
The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is a division of India's Department of Space. Its mission since the 1960s has been to increase national development through space technology. Driven by the socio-economic vision of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, the organization is mainly focused on satellite deployment, and is ranked 6th among the largest space agencies in the world. Its first rocket was launched in 1980.
ISRO is headquartered in Bangalore, India, with multiple facilities spread throughout the country. In 2008, it launched India's first mission to the moon. Many geostationary satellites have been launched since, mainly for communications and observation. The organization also maintains research, test, launch and control facilities. Reusable launch vehicles, manned space flights and space science missions are in planning stages.
