Iron Mountain Digital Careers & Info

Current CEO: William Meaney

Status: Active

Iron Mountain is in the business of storing and protecting documents from all types of businesses from old film reels for Hollywood Studios to legal documents for attorneys and medical records for hospitals. Many of these documents require special care and this company knows all the ways to protect them for the present and for future generations.

Iron Mountain was founded in 1951 by Herman Knaust in Livingston, New York. He was once known for his mushrooms but when the demand for mushrooms declined, Mr. Knaust turned his "Iron Mountain" once for mushroom keeping, into secure vaults for documents of Jewish refugees fleeing from Hitler's conquered lands during World War II. The company's name became Iron Mountain Atomic Storage, Inc. and Mr. Knaust opened an office in the Empire State Building where he could take full advantage of his genius for publicity.

Today, Iron Mountain careers consist of a multitude of disciplines. Where once there were warehouse employees responsible for storing and retrieving documents in paper cartons through an elaborate manual inventory system, today working at Iron Mountain is just as demanding in its detail, but offers a huge realm of career choices covering a number of skill sets.

By the very nature of its business, Iron Mountain must be, above all, customer service oriented. When a business takes another company's most important papers and guarantees they will never be lost and will not be destroyed until the customer requests that service, that customer must be king or there is no survival for Iron Mountain. Iron Mountain is now in its 60th year of operation and shows no signs of disappearing.

The Iron Mountain culture has remained focused on customer service throughout its years, but the inner operating systems have changed dramatically with the advances in technology made since the company's founding. With those dynamic changes came many opportunities for new careers within Iron Mountain. Where once there were skilled warehouse people able to store and retrieve thousands of documents through a manual inventory system, now there is a career for software engineers, consultants, data entry people and many other technical people expert in their field.

Whether the employee is in charge of customer service for a division, managing the IT systems or responsible for the operation of one of the many technical machines used in a facility, Iron Mountain benefits are top notch in the industry. One intangible benefit Iron Mountain provides all employees is an ever-evolving environment in all areas of the company.
