The Israel Defense Forces are the military forces for the nation of Israel. The IDF, combining pre-statehood organizations such as Palmach and the Hagana, was established in May 1948, just after the declaration of independence. Today, the IDF, consisting of air force, navy and ground forces, has thousands of active and reserve personnel and a budget over fourteen billion dollars annually.
The IDF is organized under a General Staff structure lead by the Chief, the highest ranking officer in the military reporting directly to the Defense Minister. Military service in Israel is compulsory for both men (3 years) and women (2 years). After that service, reserve duty continues for up to one month annually. Reserve service is extended in times of war. Exemptions are made under various specified conditions with optional National Service as an alternative.
The IDF has around 175,000 active duty personnel and another 400,00+ in the reserve. Some personnel are on permanent duty, having agreed to continued service after their compulsory service. Often this agreement is reached in order to receive specialized training. If soldiers remain on permanent duty for sufficient duration, they receive a pension and qualify for it at a younger age than the average Israeli.
