Current CEO: Noel Quinn Status: Active
In 1865, HSBC Holdings PLC was founded and named after the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC). It was established to fund the growing trade between China, India and Europe. Throughout history, the local and international business of the bank focused on trade finance. By the end of the century, HSBC was the primary financial institution in Asia.
In the early twentieth century, HSBC became increasingly involved with financing internal infrastructure projects such as railways and modernization and issued loans to national governments. The 1920s brought a return to prosperity in the East after WWI. New industries emerged, and the commodity’s trade skyrocketed.
The 1930s brought in an era of economic recession, political turmoil and uncertainty in the bank’s markets. During WWII much of the bank’s staff became prisoners of war as the enemy marched through Asia. Because the bank had built up large reserves in peace time, it survived and played a large part in the reconstruction of the Hong Kong economy.
Between 1949 and 1955, most of the bank’s offices in mainland China were closed. Only the Shanghai office continued service, but brought a risk of over-concentrating its interests in Hong Kong. As a result, the bank diversified through several acquisitions and alliances and was able to extend its range of services with the formation of a merchant banking division.
HSBC careers are very rewarding for the right people. HSBC is looking for International Managers (Ims), highly talented and internationally mobile managers capable of working in a wide variety of positions in the business, in any location. Those who expect to be working at HSBC Holdings must be flexible. They will be working in a variety of roles all across the HSBC businesses and support functions, often traveling between countries.
The HSBC culture is driven by business needs. Employees are expected to build a rounded career and appropriately utilize skills and experiences. They do not have a say in the role or location of their assignment.
