"Great company to work for. Working on interesting things and really enjoy the people I work with. I like that I get to work on different and interesting projects. All over, remote sites. I like the family aspect of things. Doors are always open. Passionate people about what they do."

"I worked with a Superintendent that had worked for six years for this company. He told me things had changed for the worse. I'm just waiting for something better to come along then I'm out of here. Always being watched while in the office - hate that place. Out in the field is worse, we never get any equipment or man-power when needed."

"By far the worst work environment I've ever experienced. Dysfunctional CEO and micro-manager with a temper. This resonates at every level and you never know when your time will come. A sub-par civil operation but buildings are a complete joke as the guys calling the shots had no previous building experience. Save yourself the time and continue looking for a different job."

"I've worked for this company for 5 years 11 months, after having an accident in a company truck, having two surgeries, I went back to work for them, worked for 6 months running two projects at the same time, they fired me because Hal was mad at me."

"Started off pretty good, but went south after a while and I no longer enjoyed it."

What do you like about working at Hal Hays Construction?

"Nice office, easy commute, some nice coworkers. Somewhat relaxed and flexible as far as schedule and hours go."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"I wouldn't recommend interviewing with this company, but if you do, make sure you really understand what your job responsibilities are and have them communicate that to you. Although some people have been with the company for a few years, I wouldn't say this company has much in the way of job security so be warned."

What don't you like about working at Hal Hays Construction?

"No trust. No communication. Management likes to intimidate. Micromanagement. Video cameras throughout the entire office so you are monitored constantly. High Turnover. Feels like you are walking on egg shells."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Communication needs to happen a lot more. If there is an issue, it needs to be communicated effectively so that the problem can be resolved, not just build up. Proper training would be nice, and more structure to what the requirements are for various positions."

"Hal the owner and his son Heath are the rudest people I have ever met. They don't know how to treat contractors that work for them."

"Fear. Insecurity. In the dark."

What do you like about working at Hal Hays Construction?

"OK benefits (no matching 401k). Many hardworking professionals, challenging market."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"If you are looking for work and are getting desperate, take the job, but keep your resume out there. 6 months is average stay for most managers."

What don't you like about working at Hal Hays Construction?

"The culture of fear. Everyday could be your last. If there is a plan, a vision to move the company to the next level, it is not communicated. Yet, you are responsible for getting them there. It has been made obvious on many occasions that a large portion of the revenue is from a market that the owner knows nothing about. I applaud the effort to diversify, but they have jumped into waters that are out of their depth, but it isn't the ownership's fault, it's everyone else. It is obvious that decisions have been made that are knee jerk reactions and panic."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"You cannot sustain growth with the amount of turnover you have. You don't know everything, hire people to help you and then trust those people. While a 25 yr old operation manager might know how to do things the HHCI way, it doesn't mean he knows how to do things the correct way. If you want to grow, you have to communicate with your people. Stop saying you want leadership if you refuse to listen to what the leaders are saying."

"Everything you read here is correct. The good comments are comings from the marketing department, obviously trying to better their reputation. Worked there for a while and saw lack of knowledge and no respect for their employees. Literally woke up dreading coming to work. CEO is a daddy's boy who has never had any other job in his life and knows nothing about managing a business. Such high turnover. Get yelled at for small mistakes, large accomplishments get ignored. You're worthless to them. They want employees to invest in them, but they won't do the same for you."

What do you like about working at Hal Hays Construction?

"There are some great people in the field that I was honored to meet and work with."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Don't. Turnover is high (3 months) and benefits are poor. Unfortunately, this company is not doing well."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"File for bankruptcy while you still have time and learn from your mistakes. You cannot under bid every project, skimp on labor/equipment/material resources and think you deserve a profit."

What do you like about working at Hal Hays Construction?

"The few honest hard working people that do work in this company and the friends I have made. We have all banded together and lean on each other for support in this difficult working environment."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Just walk away."

What don't you like about working at Hal Hays Construction?

"The owners. They never show positive reinforcement to their employees, only belittle them and embarrass them in front of other employees."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"They need to re-evaluate their work ethics and realize its only going to get worse from here on out, even with the many law suits and high turn-over, I am surprised that little has been done to correct the owners of their foolish business running ways."

"Careless for employees, poor workmanship, poor quality, poor communication."

What do you like about working at Hal Hays Construction?

"It's a pay check. And with the way the economy continues to be I'll be around until they let me go or find another job."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Look for another job, I know is brutal out there but HHC just burns your reputation and ties your hands when you are willing to do a job."

What don't you like about working at Hal Hays Construction?

"Always moving into a project late, high turn around. Long hours, short you on your pay check. I worked 40+ hours and only got paid for 30. When you let them know they say you were not on the job site even if you work from your computer at home or at another site. Poor organization skills, poor communications, poor knowledge in managements."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Hire competent people and let the people that know what they are doing do their jobs. Don't asked them to call the SUPER-SUPERintendent. Because by the time they hear from the SUPER is too late to schedule work."

Preconstruction Manager

"It beats living on the street. But there is no dignity in either."

What do you like about working at Hal Hays Construction?

"It put food on the table. I learned how not to treat people."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Don't. They thrive on a culture of paranoia. You won't be allowed to fix the problems. You will be watched. Literally, there are cameras everywhere, and the owner is watching. Your time will be watched. The owner doesn't understand that a smart, dedicated person, working a smarter 50 hrs a week is better than the uncreative HHCI robot working 60 plus. There is no opportunity for growth. the company is as large as it will ever be under the current leadership. No matching 401k."

What don't you like about working at Hal Hays Construction?

"Turnover. It seems they have a goal of hiring every QC and safety officer in the state. I've seen people fired because of their personalities. Illogical and knee jerk directives from the owner. The cameras and culture of paranoia. The fact that it was apparent on several occasions that the owner didn't understand some of the basic elements of Design-Build, but refused to listen to those who were experts who did understand it. The owner surrounds himself with yes-men."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"You will never grow further than you are right now if you continue to hire and fire at the current rate. Period. Good people, unless desperate, will never join you. Doesn't it make more sense to hire someone, train them on how to do things the HHC way, give them clear goals and expectations and keep them longer You are wasting money and and other people's time. You want to move from good to great. You should start at being good first."
