"Unique Opportunity for Me"

What do you like about working at Herman Miller, Inc.?

"I had some unique opportunities. I used some engineering skills when possible. I had the chance to manage a business unit that actually required timely delivery of commitments. I formed and led a highly effective yet small team."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"If you are an engineer with skills or a degree from a competitive university, skip it. If you are an interior decorator, or just need a chance to rise above mediocre skills and experience, they'll give you a chance ."

What don't you like about working at Herman Miller, Inc.?

"The furniture industry is not a place for highly intelligent people. It also is not a good place for degreed engineers with world class skills. It's a better place for middle of the road folks to design a few things and feel good about a 35 hour work week."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Don't allow hearsay and politics guide decisions. Look at real numbers. Learn from competitive industries and apply best practices. If you bring outside skillsets into the company, don't let them get buried in the West Michigan old world culture."
