GTE Corporation was the largest independent telephone company in the United States, operating approximately 26.1 million access lines in 1999. They offered a wide range of communication services, including interactive video programming, residential telephone services, corporate voice and data services and wireless telephone services. The company also provided telecommunications services from aircraft to terrestrial fixed-line networks. Some of the largest cities served by GTE were Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Tampa, St Petersburg and Washington.

GTE Corporation also offered services outside the US. They operated cellular mobile telephone networks for 6.7 million customers throughout Canada, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and Argentina. They also offered fixed network operations in these countries, especially long distance services to different wireless networks.

Previously, GTE was in the electronics business. However, the company sold its consumer electronics business, including their brand names of Philco and Sylvania. Then, the company went to telecommunications but made a number of reorganizational and consolidation efforts.

GTE Corporation and its subsidiaries were acquired by Verizon Communications. When the acquisition was completed, GTE workers were absorbed by Verizon and rolled their benefits into a new plan. However, former employees of GTE who did not go to Verizon still got their benefits.
