Founded in 1927 by William Grainger, the company has enjoyed continuous growth and had sales in excess of $7.2 billion dollars in 2010.

The first branch was opened in Chicago, but opportunities for working at Grainger expanded in 1933 with the addition of a branch in Philadelphia. By 1936, the supply company had fifteen branches operating around the country. Grainger went public in 1967, is currently sold under the symbol GWW, and is available on the New York and Chicago stock exchanges.

Grainger careers have always depended on embracing technology and making the most of new opportunities. Grainger was the first industrial supply company to use optical character recognition equipment in 1976. Their systems continued to advance with the use of a satellite-based digital communication network, an electronic MRO catalog on CD-ROM and a corporate website that started accepting orders in 1995.
