Goddard Space Flight Center Overview

Goddard Space Flight Center is a U.S. government agency that is dedicated to space exploration. Established in 1959 and named for rocket pioneer Dr. Robert Goddard, the center is NASA's first and largest space flight research facility. Over the years, it has proved critical in developing manned space flight, and innovating new technology for studying our planet, solar system, galaxy and universe.

Goddard Space Flight Center operates a main campus in Greenbelt, Maryland. Several more facilities are spread across the northeastern U.S. and New Mexico. Some of its current missions include satellites that study cloud formations, sea surface salinity, and the X-rays emitted by black holes in distant galaxies. The Mars rover, Curiosity is one of its major achievements. In 2013, the center will launch another Mars probe that will gather data on the planet's upper atmosphere.
