George Mason University is a public university which was founded in 1957 as a part of the University of Virginia System. It is currently headed by President Alan G. Merten. GMU has been an independent university since 1972. It operates campuses in Fairfax County, Arlington County, Loudon County, and Prince William County. George Mason boasts the largest student enrollment in Virginia and is accredited by the Southern Association of Schools & Colleges. As a public university, GMU offers employment opportunities to job seekers of all experience and education levels. Many employment opportunities exist for classified staff, faculty, support staff, and student employees. Working at George Mason University offers excellent schedule flexibility for students who are working on their undergraduate or graduate degrees.

As with all public universities, George Mason offers a variety of services to its students. Licensed professionals and support staff in the fields of mental health, learning services, and student life find good job opportunities at this university. George Mason University careers offer individuals in these fields the opportunity to grow professionally and advance in their career path. GMU students who wish to begin careers in student services fields may be able to intern in these departments as well. Although many colleges and universities have struggled in the recent economy, GMU continues to hire new faculty for both adjunct and tenure-track positions. Professors at George Mason earn excellent salaries which are commensurate to or more than those at similar public learning institutions.

Working at a university can be a demanding job, especially while students are in session. The George Mason culture fosters a sense of cooperation between various departments and schools. A recent emphasis on cross-training has allowed GMU to offer better student services while also giving growth opportunities to the individuals who are employed there. As an established university, George Mason will likely continue to grow at a steady rate and will continue to offer opportunities for individuals who wish to work as faculty or classified staff.

The GMU benefits package mirrors packages offered to all employees of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Full-time employees are offered a shared cost health insurance package and a no cost life insurance plan. Faculty, full-time staff, and eligible part-time staff can participate in a retirement plan, with the university making some contribution to each plan depending on the hire date of the employee. Part-time student employees are not offered the same benefits but do enjoy a work environment which is supportive of their class schedule.
