Fresh Express Overview

Fresh Express, a subsidiary of Chiquita Brands International, is the leading seller of packaged salads in the United States, capturing 40 percent of the retail market and generating $1 billion in revenues. Headquartered in Salinas, California, Fresh Express was the first produce company to offer ready-to-eat packaged salads for retail sale in 1989.

In the 1930s, company founder Bruce Church formed an ice company in Salinas that supported the cross-country shipping of fresh produce by rail. Church’s son-in-law, Ted Taylor, took over Bruce Church, Inc. in 1958. In 1978, Taylor renamed the company Red Coach Foods and began marketing packaged shredded lettuce to fast food restaurants. The company was renamed Fresh Express in 1987. In 2001, Performance Food Group bought Fresh Express. The Company was sold to Chiquita in 2005.
