"Hated my job! Food Lion is more about making a penny rather than its associates."

What do you like about working at Food Lion?

"Flexible hours. Job security. Meeting new people. Co-workers are usually awesome."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"It's not about what you know, it's about who you know. If you don't kiss butt, you will never advance with this company."

What don't you like about working at Food Lion?

"Food Lion does not care about its associates. CSSM's cannot have a day off without being called and bothered about petty issues that no one else can seem to handle. It takes forever to move up and advance with Food Lion. It's not about what you know, it's about who you know!"

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Corporate management needs to come down to earth. Dist. Managers just come through and complain and gripe about any and everything. Associates do NOT receive credit for their good work, just complaints about what they have done wrong."

"As far as the managers go they are very disrespectful. they bully their employees and they don’t care about their employees especially the customer service manager she can’t keep people upfront because she allows her position at the company to go to her head. this is why lots of people want to quit or change positions."

"I'm underpaid for the amount of work I have to do and the distance I come to work. They put an extreme amount of work on me, want it perfect in 40 hours, and lied to me telling me they were gonna give me more money after 3 months."

"Have worked there for many years, and while there were rules for no food on the front end which makes sense, drinks were always permitted until recently. Every other employee in every other department throughout the store can easily leave their workstation unattended for bathroom, water fountain and smoking breaks and nearly all of them do so often. But cashiers can only leave at break time or customer traffic permitting, which sometimes leaves us waiting for an hour or more for a trip to the water fountain, which is unacceptable in light of the fact that no other employee in the store has that restriction. Because of that and because a cashier's job requires excessive talking which is dehydrating to provide even basic customer courtesy, far more than any other job in the store, cashiers should at least be permitted to have bottled water at the registers. There are ample places to keep them out of customer sight and well away from the electronics at the front of the store at our workstations. Additionally, one lady cashier is a diabetic and brings her temperature-sensitive medications in an insulated bag that she used to keep by her register with her. They recently told her that had to be stored in the common break room in the back of the store, well out of reach should she need it and well out of sight to supervise it and ensure it's not being tampered with or stolen. Food Lion has been in business a long time, long enough to know what people need to do their jobs well. Water and our meds shouldn't be too much to ask for. So why is it?"

"Instead of allowing those who are working to get more hours, they insist on hiring more people, cutting those who want to work more hours back. We constantly fight for hours. There is no way one can live on 15 to 23 hours a work week. The overall management of the company does not care about it's associates. Moving up is impossible. Too much favoritism goes on. If you are not in the "in crowd" with the management, do not suck up to management, then you basically get little to no hours. I would not recommend."

"I enjoy my job because of the people I work with. It's all about the culture from place to place, and the branch I work in is very team-oriented and stresses a family dynamic. That has been my experience, but again, that varies from place to place based on leadership."
