Engineering managers supervise teams of field and principal engineers. They are responsible for making sure a project remains on budget, finishes in a timely manner, and meets all safety and building regulations. In addition to these duties, engineer managers also review drafting sheets; and they give advice to clients concerning the development of a project.
Skillset: Many engineer managers have excellent leadership skills and a strong background in drafting, physics and technology development or maintenance. They are comfortable with a variety of advanced computer software programs and they also have very solid communication skills. They are adept at team building, giving instruction and they have exceptional writing and assessment skills.
Education: It is common for engineer managers to have a minimum of a bachelors degree in engineering. Some companies may require a more advanced degree, depending on the size of the company and the type of projects the company is involved in. Calculus, electronic engineering courses and computer science classes are desirable.
Career Path: A successful career as an engineer manager is built on a person’s ability to lead a team well and the individual’s knowledge of general engineering. Internships at technical companies or manufacturing plants are recommended.
