What do you like about working at Jefferson County Public Schools?

"They are unionized, so there are is a great deal of support for educators there. I always had supportive and caring teammates. There was a great deal of professional development opportunities. They had many resources for students of varying needs."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Review the school's mission statement, ask about their curriculum, check school's test scores, free & reduced lunches, afterschool programs, ask about math and reading interventions, and always use your education lingo on differentiation, collaboration, using Benchmarks, following grade level expectations, and giving students learning experiences that will positively impact their learning (ways of engagement). You have high expectations of your students and you try to challenge your students at every opportunity. You can ask any administrator in that district that I interviewed with or any other district & they will tell you that Michele interviews very well. However, Michele is expensive and wants to work in a supportive and caring environment for students and teachers."

What don't you like about working at Jefferson County Public Schools?

"They don't want highly qualified teachers. I have a M.A. and over 3 years FT classroom experience, with over 11 years of total experience working in public schools. I had administrators tell me I was too expensive. You ask anyone who works in public education and they will tell you that they want young (easy to mold) and inexpensive salaried employees. I don't think $40K is a lot of money for an experienced and well educated instructor with excellent evaluations and references. Also, I worked in the district for 6 years as a student teacher, substitute teacher, classroom teacher, and even with excellent evaluations, I was constantly hired as a temporary one year employee and not rehired as a permanent employee."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"I served the management on many committees in the district, so they probably know who I am. Hire me back! I've been looking for a FT teaching job since 2003! I gave up this year, because I was tired of school districts calling me for interviews as a quota only and realizing as soon as I stepped into the interview room or was called on the phone that I was just a number! I'm not the only former employee who feels this way."
