"Get any deals written and signed before accepting the position. Insist on orientation of at least 3 weeks with the option for an additional 3 if the preceptor is always being called away to do other things and is unable to orientation you. Really I'd just insist to speak to other staff members without management there so you can get a true picture of how the clinic is to work at rather then the snow job management gives interviewees."

What don't you like about working at Duke University?

"Management, abusive providers, low pay scale in comparison to same job in other cities, failure to keep up with evidence based care and standards of care put out by specialties instead they insist on following the Duke way regardless of there being any evidence to show the Duke way is of any benefit to patients. Also the overall attitude displayed by Duke providers towards patients, Medicare, Medicaid, out side providers is very mean spirited. It is really off putting that providers act like having to see patients or interact with them or their families is so burdensome."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Come into the new century and treat employees with respect and be sure they have the appropriate safety equipment available and that they all are taught to use it. Counsel providers that are rude to staff and develop a zero policy towards staff abuse by management and providers. Stop with the Duke way, embrace change and best practices. Management needs to stay educated too."
