"I worked with D&S Community Services for seven months. The clients are great and fun to be around but caregivers get little support. There is lackluster training and the specific needs of the individuals are not expressed. The job is ultimately dangerous. Being alone at a house with four autistic adults, that can have multiple dangerous habits, is not safe. It takes a long time to learn behavioral techniques through trial and error (the actual behavioral therapists don't give accurate information about the individuals since they are not the ones living with the clients.) The nurses are also hard to get a hold of, which can be a big problem. Lastly, the demand of the job and few staff leads to overworking. This includes going weeks without a day off, extreme overtime (70 plus hours), and even 17 hour shifts. This job requires a strong dedication to autistic individuals."
