A driver is responsible for the safe operation of a vehicle that carries persons or goods. Drivers may specialize in operating different types of vehicles, such as private cars, limousines, taxis, trucks and buses. Daily tasks include performing a safety inspection of the vehicle, basic maintenance tasks such as checking tire pressure and fluid levels, driving the vehicle on its assigned route and completing pre or post trip reports
Skill Sets: Drivers need to have the skills necessary to safely operate the type of vehicle they are assigned to. Knowledge of an area's roads and geography, plus the ability to communicate and interact with the public when carrying passengers are also required. Some driving jobs, particularly those involving carrying VIPs in high risk locations, may require advanced driving skills such as high speed driving and evasive maneuvers.
Education: The educational requirements will depend on the type of driving job sought. At the minimum, a valid driving license for the class of vehicle being driven is required. A vocation school diploma or certification may also be required.
Career Path: To become a driver, one must first strive to maintain a clean driving record. Pass any certifications or driving courses required.
