Directors of finance are usually in control of a corporation’s financial matters. They assume responsibilities to ensure that the company complies with tax laws, operates on a fiscal budget and they help with business planning. During a typical day at work, a director of finance may meet with business owners, investors and tax lawyers to discuss a financial plan for a company. They also work closely with accounting departments, human resources departments and purchasing departments within a company.


Skillset: Many directors of finance have strong accounting and financial investing backgrounds. They often have employment backgrounds as business financial planners or certified public accountants. Strong skills for this profession include economics awareness, business planning and knowledge of computer software programs.


Education: A masters degree in corporate finance, international business or accounting is generally held by a director of finance. If a business is small, a person may be able to become employed in this position if he holds a bachelors degree in a closely-related field and also has relative work experience.


Career Path: A great foundation for a career in financial directing is based on strong mathematical abilities and knowledge of statistics. Classes in tax law, investing and economics are recommended.
