Dictaphone Healthcare Solutions is a division of Nuance Healthcare. The company is based in Stratford, Connecticut, with offices throughout the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Europe. The company develops hardware and software for dictation, voice processing and voice management systems. Dictaphone’s main market is hospitals, but it also serves other markets including education, public safety and the legal and insurance industries.

Dictaphone has a long history. It was formed during the early days of human voice recording in Alexander Graham Bell’s Volta Laboratory. Originally a division of Columbia Graphophone, it was sold in 1923. At that point, the Dictaphone Corporation was formed.

Dictaphone was an industry leader throughout the 20th century. Its involvement in wartime production led to inventions in voice logging products that were later developed for commercial and public use. It developed the first portable dictation machine, the Dictet, in 1957, and continued with the development of innovative products through the 1990s.

Dictaphone was acquired by Pitney Bowes in the late 1970s but operated as an independent subsidiary. It was sold to Stonington Partners in 1995, then to Lernout & Hauspie (L&H) in 2000. Shortly after, both Dictaphone and L&H filed for bankruptcy. Dictaphone was sold off and became an independent company in 2001. Dictaphone sold off some of its own operating units in 2005 and 2006. In 2006, the company was purchased by Nuance Communications for over $300 million.

Dictaphone benefits are comparable to other large companies. As part of Nuance, employees receive benefits including stock options, 401K and full health benefits. Dictaphone careers range from sales representatives, administrative staff, support technicians and engineers and looks for candidates with a background in speech and language technologies or imaging. They hire regularly throughout the United States and internationally. Major offices in the United States are in Chicago, Pittsburgh, Burlington, MA, Eatontown, NJ, Sunnyvale, CA, and Melbourne, FL. Most sales positions require a minimum of five years’ experience or ten years’ experience for remote positions. Technical positions also normally require a minimum of five years’ experience.
