"It was good, but they need to turn the ship around!!"

What do you like about working at Delta Air Lines?

"It was a great place to work from the late 1970's through 1980's even early 1990's until the CEO tried the 7.5 program and cut the work force / pay and benefits. Prior to that, there was a family atmosphere working at Delta Air Lines. You felt the company really cared about you and in return you went above and beyond for the company, there was personal ownership in Delta. It felt good to come to work and you cared about your job. As an aircraft mechanic you had great opportunity to learn many types of aircraft, you were cross utilized in many different skills and were well trained. Delta had strong leadership in management until the early 1990's. The pay was good, the benefits were adequate for the sacrifice you had to make - working midnight shift, holidays, rotating days off, and working out in the weather. (Detroit, Cincinnati, Philadelphia) There was opportunity for advancement and promotion from within the company."

What don't you like about working at Delta Air Lines?

"In the early 1990's, the CEO bought part of PAN AM for an astronomical amount of money, bringing large debt and worn-out aircraft to Delta. Delta lost money for several years due to this acquisition. The CEO implemented the 7.5 program laying off many employees and cutting pay and benefits. At the time Delta started to match your 401k with Delta Stock, which was all lost in the bankruptcy in 2005. Many employees lost all or most of there Delta 401k match. Then he retires and brought in a new CEO who has never worked at an airline or ever ran one. Delta lost large amounts of money year after year under his leadership. Again the employees must sacrifice for management's poor and failed leadership, there were more cuts in pay and benefits while the CEO received his full retirement in 5 years and departed the company with the special account so he did not lose his retirement, in the sum of 40 million dollars, while the employees had to take cuts. What didn't I like about working at Delta? The lack of respect for the employees who work at Delta for 20 and 30 years, sacrificing time with their families working crazy hours, shifts, weekends, holidays and in the weather, only to be put out to the curb like trash while the management rapes the company of all its cash with very poor leadership!! You can't believe what management tells you at Delta!!"

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Start caring about the employees again. We use to have a saying on our paychecks - ALL AIRLINES ARE THE SAME, ONLY THE PEOPLE MAKE THE DIFFERENCE. Stop hiring employees at a B or C scale (Delta Global Service) - they have no ownership of the company and no career, all they have is a weekly income and not much of that. The BEAN COUNTERS got it wrong when they went to contract employees such as DGS. That is when Delta lost control of their product and employees. No one cares about their job or career at Delta anymore, it is just a way to make money, unless you can find a better way like I did after 27 and a half years. What all did we lose as 27 year employees? My 401k match, 10's of thousands of dollars), 2 weeks of vacation, $12,000 a year in salary, a shortened frozen pension, cash balance retirement that was shortened in 2005, lost all the sick time I had earned over many years, lost survivor-ship to the shorted pension for my wife, my wife lost her free medical in retirement that was in a written contract as part of her retirement, she was awarded $26,000 in cash from the court in bankrupty only to be shorted again with a $10,000 payout instead of the $26,000 and now pays $250 per month for our free medical, and last but not least my job when you pulled maintenance out of the city I was in with no bump rights. YEAH RIGHT. I am going to LGA or DCA with a bankrupt airline that has not told the truth for the past ten years!! Don't write this off as a disgruntled employee, because I am not, what I stated is the truth, I enjoyed my job and career at Delta Air Lines until management destroyed it. Also don't say the things of the past are gone and you can no longer do business like Delta did in the past. I'm currently employed in aviation as an aircraft maintenance technician, working for a company that cares about their employees and have very strong core values much like Delta did years ago. It's a joy to work for a company that cares about their employees and in return we care about our company. It's a win-win (employee / employer) not a stuff our pockets full at the employees' expense. By the way, my salary and benefits are higher than what I would receive at Delta. You as management are wondering why Delta is suffering as an Air Line, it's because you treat your employees like trash, contracted out many functions within the airline and no one has ownership in Delta the company. Maybe management needs to be truthful to the employees, set some truthful core values and regain their trust and ownership, instead of seeing how much money they can stuff in their pockets at the employees' expense prior to management departing the company. GOOD LUCK TURNING THIS SHIP AROUND!!"
