Senior Programmer Analyst

"This was a job I loved. This was a place I couldn't stay."

What do you like about working at Cunard Line?

"You get to travel. I enjoyed training and support on board several ships. They now have a 9/80 work week and flexible start time. The benefits are acceptable. You receive flex time for the weekends you spend on the ship. You have a list of people to call if you have an issue that is not in your area and they usually answer the phone even at 2:00 in the morning. Management all the way up is on a first name basis. Everyone is an expert at what they do. If you want to learn new things management will give you a crack at it if they can. Free coffee, tea and hot chocolate. The help desk screens all support calls."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Shipboard has a hard time finding java programmers. They need you if your good. Don't be intimidated you have the upper hand. Even if your java needs a little work they may give you a chance.Don't fall in love with the director."

What don't you like about working at Cunard Line?

"The parking is problematic. They read all the email. They tape all conversations. Directors office and all conference rooms have ears. They can watch everything you do. I once wrote an email to my daughter complaining about one of the employees bothering me and he was fired. I suspect he was leaving anyway. Employees use the director's office for personal calls and meetings. I knew better. Certain employees will not stay out of my yard at my home."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Put hand held showers in cabins without tubs. Split the shipboard support calls between pc and development. Two hotlines. The two groups are too large and diverse. But keep the phone list as it is. Don't give up the data to Elavon you'll lose control. I hope you obtained the ability to import records from Elavon into the PMS system. That new gateway was the chance of a lifetime. Hope you didn't blow it. Someone just put SOME of my programs out to SOME of the ships. I knew how to get around it. I bet it stung them after I was gone. I would have helped you if you had called."

Traffic Manager

"Princess Cruises was where I learned retail, and it was a good job that got worse over the years..."
