What do you like about working at Crescent Jewelers?

"Originally, I started in software development and was promoted to Systems Administrator by my original manager, Delmar Stuermer. Del was the best manager and best mentor in my career, ever. I got the chance at a lot of opportunities to do things that others thought I could never pull off. I proved them all wrong and completed these large projects. I built the entire network, the data center and I automated the administration and monitoring of the health of these through custom software that I developed. I also automated the entire software QA and build/release process (a structure that just did not exist prior to my work). This led into my QA and build/release skills. I got to do all kinds of things here in this position."

"The company is gone (not surprisingly)."

What don't you like about working at Crescent Jewelers?

"Unfortunately, new management took over as the company sold out to a corporate buyer. The new VP who replaced Del was not liked and the entire operations staff quit, including my immediate manager, Michael. While I did not like the new VP at work, I did like him personally and he has a very nice family and is a very sweet guy and a lot of fun to be around. But professionally, I'd never work with him again. I was the last in my group to leave. Never burn bridges. I later ran into the VP as he became a member of a yacht club that I belong to and we continued to have fun on a social level. The past was never brought up. You just never know when you'll run into people again. I am the only one that had nice things to say about him and kept it positive while just forgetting the past. Others still hold resentment.There also was a huge amount of discrimination, sexual and other harassment at this company. A lot of fraud and theft was also going on. Very sad as this company had no real HR department and no real staff to deal with the fraud."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"The company is gone now, but for anyone that was there: where ever you are now, make sure that you pay attention to the little things and are really in tune with what your employees thing, overall morale, inappropriate practices such as harassment, discrimination, nepotism, fraud simply do not belong in a professional environment. Support your IT department, particularly when they are warning you about fraud, and other serious issues that can land the company in court."
