Conseco Inc. works by buying ailing insurance companies, making them more efficient by reducing their workforce, and increasing their value by improving their performance. Using that formula, Conseco was able to acquire several companies and grew into a $98 billion company by 1999.

In 2010, Conseco Insurance Company and Conseco Health Insurance Company were merged into Washington National Insurance Company. Although Conseco is no longer known under its original name, its parent company has gone on to become CNO Financial Group.
