ComputerLand Careers & Info

Former CEO: William H. Millard

Status: Defunct since February of 1999.

ComputerLand was a chain of computer stores that existed during the early years of the so-called PC revolution. During this time, computers were being marketing for home use for the first time. ComputerLand was the outlet selected by IBM to introduce their first PC in the early 1980s. ComputerLand opened its first store in 1976. At its peak in the mid-1980s, the chain included more than 800 stores nationwide. The rapid commercialization of the personal computer lead to the company''s financial downfall by the end of the 1980s. By 1990, many retail locations closed. The company did make an attempt to survive online and with retail stores in certain cities, but the attempt proved fruitless and the company officially folded in February of 1999.

ComputerLand was founded by William H Millard. Millard started his foray in the computer business with a company known as IMS Associates, Inc. in 1974. The company did not last long. In 1976, Millard initiated plans to start ComputerLand. The company was described as a more organized effort designed to take advantage of the then untapped home computer market. Millard teamed with Ed Faber, a former IBM manager, to start a new retail venture. A pilot store was opened in Hayward, California, later that year. In addition to offering customers a place to buy PCs, Millard provided a place where PC owners could purchase accessories and get their computers serviced.

ComputerLand succeeded by offering customers a product that was new and previously unavailable in a retail setting. The company was a victim of competition and the emergence of the online era when customers were able to get similar or better products at a lower price with better service. ComputerLand careers included mostly sales jobs and management jobs at the store''s retail outlets. When the company attempted online sales, tech jobs were added to the company''s list of available positions. Working at ComputerLand was described as a mostly pleasant and challenging experience during the company''s prime period of operation. At the start of the computer revolution, the ComputerLand culture was described as "the place to be" for those in technology fields. ComputerLand benefits were comparable to other similar companies during its operating years. Typical benefits offered by ComputerLand included:

• Medical
• Optional dental
• Optional vision
• Life insurance
• Retirement account options
