The commonwealth of Virginia was admitted to the Union in 1788. The state played an important part in early American history. The first permanent English settlement was founded in Jamestown in 1607. Also, both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars ended on Virginia's soil. The capital of Virginia is Richmond, and other prominent cities include Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Chesapeake. It is the nation's 12th most populous state.
