Overview Cold Stone Creamery was started in 1988 by Susan and Donald Sutherland. They opened their first store in Tempe, Arizona, and that store is still open today. The main product is a creamy, high-butterfat ice cream that is made at the store and is customized at the time of purchase by adding candy, nuts or other items. Cold Stone gets its name from the frozen granite stone that is used for these “mix-ins.”

Since its inception, Cold Stone has increased its menu to include coffee, cakes, cookies, pies and smoothies and has opened stores across the United States and in many foreign countries. It has co-branded with other food chains such as Tim Hortons and Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory to boost sales and to assure a year round customer base. In 2007, the Creamery merged with Kahala Corporation and is now Kahala-Cold Stone.
