Charge nurses are registered nurses (RN's) who oversee, plan and coordinate care. Daily tasks include assigning responsibilities to other staff, monitoring patient care, and solving difficult situations.


Skill Set: Charge nurses have strong critical-thinking skills and are organized individuals. Other skills that are necessary to perform this job include customer service skills and computer skills. Because charge nurses interact with patients and staff members on a daily basis, the ability to be compassionate towards others is an essential skill as well.


Education: As associates degree is required to become a charge nurse, although a bachelor's degree can increase desirability. Additional education requirements include RN certification and any state requirements. Life support certification may also be required depending on the position.


Career Path: To build an impressive foundation for a career as a charge nurse, you need 3-5 years experience working as an RN. Specializing in a particular area of nursing can improve hiring prospects, as well. Those who wish to become a charge nurse should also work on developing exceptional communication skills and learn to prioritize tasks.
