City College of New York Overview

City College of New York is a college of the City University of New York system, and is also the oldest college in the CUNY network. It was originally established in 1847 and known as the Free Academy of the City of New York. City College is located in New York, New York and is spread out over several campuses.

City College of New York first allowed women access in 1930 but limited them to graduate programs. In 1951, the entire college became coeducational. The philosophy of the college was to allow immigrants and poorer students access to higher education through academic merit alone.
