A business development manager is in charge of handling the prospective clients for a company. They are in charge of much of the outreach done by companies. This means reaching out to potential clients through hospitality and regular contact. A good business development manager will maintain contact with possible new clients each week.


Skillset: Business development managers need the ability to sell a service to potential clients. They also need strong relationship-building skills. They should be able to sustain relationships over the long run to help the company establish new business contacts. Their personalities should be magnetic.


Education: These people might have studied business in college, though this is not exactly necessary. These jobs are much more about communication skills than they are business skills. For this reason, a person might study any number of subjects before finally landing in this job. No graduate degree is necessary for those who want to score these positions.


Career Path: This career is typically founded on a combination of personality and relationship skills. Business development managers have soft skills that they can develop through time in sales. One might get into this position by working as an account manager for a short time.
