Overview Brandeis University is one of the country's finest private schools. The suburban campus is located about nine miles west of Boston in Waltham, Massachusetts. The school was founded in 1948 and is named for Louis Brandeis. The late Justice Brandeis was the first Jewish member of the U.S. Supreme Court. Brandeis is a nonsectarian and coeducational institution and is characterized as a research and liberal arts university.

Brandeis enrolls approximately 5,500 students and has an impressive 9-to-1 student to faculty ratio. The university's alumni include Pulitzer Prize and Emmy Award winners. Nutrition scientists at Brandeis invented the Smart Balance buttery spread. Other researchers have worked on space shuttle experiments. U.S. News & World Report consistently ranks Brandeis among the nation's top 35 universities. Athletically, the men's soccer and cross-country teams have won NCAA championships.
