Brand New School Employee

"Brand New School is what I consider a "second tier" ad house. They've been around for 20 years, but clients who want real quality will go for Psyop or Buck, and real creativity will go for Gentleman Scholar. They get occasional creative work, but most jobs are low profile, unexciting, and underbid. This is a major problem because the creative directors are overall unwilling to work within budgets, or make compromises of any kind, which causes the artists to work lots of unpaid overtime. The company founder's leadership style is one that uses pressure, negative reinforcement, and fear to control people, which works in the short term, but it has really put a ceiling on the quality of work that this company can create. Most of the artists are unhappy, and not doing their best work because of this toxic atmosphere. Staff gets churned through very quickly, which also kills morale, and they don't follow California labor laws, so no paid OT. Exempt employees can expect to work late nights and weekends 60-70% of the time, and at far less pay than even the junior level freelance artists. Benefits are mostly non-existent. They do have snacks, and are dog friendly (perhaps a little too dog friendly)."
