#WednesdayWisdom: How to Improve Your Hiring Process

While you may be working hard to hire the right employees, it's important to grow and evolve with the hiring industry. Improvements can always be made to your hiring practices. Below, we've outlined a few ways for you to bring your hiring process up to speed, and ensure you're on-boarding the perfect people for the job.

Consider your company's reviews online

Online review sites are often one of the first places that candidates go to learn about a company. What will potential new hires find when they read your company's reviews? Ensuring that your brand is not only represented well by your hiring managers on-site, but that employees are sharing their favorite perks and culture benefits online as well is crucial to your hiring success. While you're at it, make sure your social media profiles are also up to date. LinkedIn is an important place for candidates to learn more about you, so be sure your page is active and informative.

Improve your interviews

Having a structured interview process will help you hire the right talent. Organizing your interviews, especially for the same position, is vital. Make sure your hiring mangers are asking each candidate the same questions so that you have a better foundation to compare and contrast. Here is a list of great questions you can ask during each interview to help get the answers you need to make a decision.

Hire character

Another piece of wisdom we'd like to impart comes from Peter Schultz, "Hire character, train skill." While skills are an important way to know if the candidate fits the role, taking Schultz's advice into consideration will help you hire the right person who will not only fit the role, but fit your company culture as well.

When interviewing, note a candidate's personality traits and the way they interact with the interviewee and others. Also note the way they respond to job duties and how they consider everything you say about the position. If they don't have 100% of the skills you're looking for, but they check off all of the boxes in the character department, they just might be your best bet.

Take your time

We understand that in most cases, you needed to hire the best employee for the job yesterday. However, rushing through the hiring process could lead to hiring the wrong person, which will end up costing you in the long run. Take your time writing the job description, reading through resumes, analyzing your hiring manager's advice, interviewing, and ultimately making a decision. Your patience during the process, as always, is a virtue.
