Baxter International, Inc. is a health care company based out of Deerfield, Illinois. The company develops products that assist people with immune disorders, kidney disease and hemophilia problems. The company was founded in 1931 by Donald Baxter. He was a physician and also a manufacturer and distributor of intravenous therapy solutions. In 1935, the company was purchased by Ralph Falk. Falk focused on research and development to propel the company forward. By 1939, he had developed a container that operated on a vacuum-type technology to extend the shelf-life of blood to weeks instead of hours.

In 1954, the company became global when an office was opened in Belgium. Baxter International has been on the leading edge of technology since the early days of the company. In 1956, the company introduced the first fully functioning artificial kidney. Baxter International became so successful that by 1971 the company became a member of the Fortune 500. The company began to offer a wide variety of vaccines and blood products in the 1980s and 1990s.

The company has not been without its troubles. In 1993, the company was found guilty of violating an anti-boycott law. Later, in 1996, the company settled a $640 million lawsuit for distribution of blood clotting concentrates infected with HIV. The CEO at the time, Vernon Loucks, was forced to resign due to the debacle. Harry Kraemer and Robert Parkinson followed his leadership.

The company is devoted to community outreach and philanthropy. Giving back is integrated into Baxter culture.
