"I did not like the lack of need for skill in business competition. When a staff downsizing occurred, I volunteered for a generous employee buyout."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Career advancement is who you know, not at all how well you do your work. You can advance, but unless you are personally connected, you will retire in your entry position or one, maybe two, levels greater."

What don't you like about working at American Electric Power?

"Electric utilities are monopoly work. Until they are required to compete, they have no need for true planning. They write budgets and operate to the budget. Competitive business, not electric utilities, must struggle and mind the competition. I an educated to deal with competitive business and that is where I thrive and perform my best."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Managerment in an electric utility is that of an administrator; it is safe and secure and requires little difficult or competitive planning."
