Alltel Careers & Info

Current CEO: Frank O’Mara

Alltel Corporation began as Allied Telephone Company back in 1943 in Little Rock, Arkansas. In 1983, Mid-Continent Telephone merged with Allied Telephone Company, forming the hybrid name Alltel. The main focus of the company turned to wireless communication in 1985 when Alltel launched its first wireless system in Charlotte, North Carolina. By 1993, the company had opened a wireless retail store and had combined its wired and wireless operations into one organization.

In 2005, Alltel announced a plan to go exclusively wireless, spinning off its wired communications business into a separate venture. This new off-shoot was called Windstream Communications. As the company focused its energy into becoming a wireless service provider, it formed roaming agreements with Verizon and Sprint. These agreements opened up a wider coverage area for Alltel customers, and it brought service into rural areas where wireless coverage had not previously ventured. The Alltel operation expanded into 34 states, serving residential and business customers alike. Business was booming.

In 2008, Alltel Corporation was acquired by Verizon Wireless for a price of $28.1 billion. The Alltel Company, under direction of CEO Frank O’Mara, now serves six states, primarily in rural areas of the nation. It is listed as the eighth largest wireless telecommunications company in the United States, serving an estimated 800,000 customers.

Alltel Corporation headquarters remain in Little Rock, Arkansas. Customers continue to receive coast-to-coast coverage through roaming agreements with Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel.
