Alcorn State University is a public institution of higher learning located in Lorman, Mississippi. It is one of the historically black universities of the United States, created in 1871 to provide education to slaves that were freed. Alcorn State became the first black land grant college in the country. The university was initially open only to men of African-American origin, however in 1895 it began admitting black women as well. Following desegregation, Alcorn State began admitting students from all racial backgrounds, but it still has a large presence of black students.

Over the years, enrollment has grown to 4,000 students. The university has a sizable number of foreign students attending. Various programs are offered to students, such as business administration, pharmacy, law and accounting. During its history, Alcorn State has had many civil rights activists, professionals and politicians among its graduates.
