Ace Hardware Careers & Info

Current CEO: John Venhuizen

Ace Hardware was founded in 1924 by a group of hardware store owners in Chicago who wanted to pool their resources to buy their merchandise in bulk so they could save money and better compete with larger retail chains. The company quickly grew throughout the Midwest and had 133 stores in seven states by 1949. In 1968 Ace stores began to branch out in their merchandise to offer other items including health and beauty products, making the Ace Hardware overseen today by President and CEO Ray Griffith much different than it was when it first started.

Although Ace opened a superstore to supply retailers in 1993, the company is best known for supplying individuals with products necessary to complete their own personal projects. Every Ace Hardware store is owned by local individuals who own their individual franchise stores, which adds to the personalized Ace Hardware culture.

Ace Hardware stores carry general hardware products geared toward helping customers complete their own hardware projects at home. Ace Hardware has its own private label of products in addition to other brands carried in stores, and has over 12,000 different products available. The company’s hardware products are sold online via its website and those of affiliates, and in retail stores across the country.

There are now over 4,400 Ace Hardware stores across the United States ranging in size from small stores located mainly in urban areas to large rural area stores. The range of store sizes and locations means that working at Ace Hardware will offer employees a very different experience depending on the work location.

Ace Hardware careers encompass a wide variety of positions, including local retail positions of cashiers and supervisors, warehouse positions at one of Ace Hardware’s distribution centers and paint facilities, and corporate positions such as buyers and analysts. Retail positions are offered throughout the country, while corporate positions are concentrated in Illinois.

Ace Hardware benefits include healthcare packages which consist of medical, dental and vision coverage, as well as prescription drug plans and life insurance. The company also offers flexible spending accounts and dependent care for parents who have children at home. 401(k) retirement plans include a company match as well as a guaranteed contribution by the company. Tuition assistance, computer classes and self-study programs help Ace employees further their educations.

Other benefits at Ace Hardware include ten paid holidays during the year and paid vacations, as well as flexible schedules for employees requiring time off from work. Adoption benefits and other employee assistance programs are also in place for employees who need them.
