On a typical day, an account specialist will analyze and record company spending data and produce financial statements and reports for management. They may also handle payroll, creation of invoices, and track overdue accounts.
Skillset: Accounting specialists are generally well organized and have strong mathematical skills. They must also have strong communication and problem solving abilities. Special knowledge and experience may be required in certain industries.
Education: Employers generally only require their accounting specialists to have a high school diploma or GED. Some employers prefer an associate or bachelor’s degree. Most accounting specialists receive on-the-job training and may be required to earn industry specific certifications.
Career Path: In order to be successful, an accounting specialist must be organized and show strong math skills. Pursuing a degree in business or a related field will increase desirability and promotional opportunities. Internships are also a great way to increase experience and build up a resume.
