An accounting assistant works under the supervision of an accountant. The assistant will make sure that all of the invoices are sent, receipts are recorded, and journals are kept up to date.
Skill Sets
Accounting assistants must have knowledge of math and organization. The assistant must be able to pay attention to detail. Computer skills are needed because most programs that are used in the accounting office are on a computer. Knowledge of bookkeeping and accounting software is required. The assistant should also be able to detect errors in the paperwork.
Education
In order to be an accounting assistant, you can have a high school diploma. Several offices may provide on the job training. You can also get an associate’s degree in accounting. A business degree is also beneficial. If you want to work in a larger office or as an upper level assistant, you should try to get your bachelor’s degree in accounting.
Career Path
While in high school, you should take as many math classes as possible. If any business classes are offered, you should take these as well. You can receive your associate’s degree at a community college. Before you graduate, you can do an internship in a local accounting office.
