What do you like about working at WORLD AFFAIRS COUNCIL?

"I'm rarely bored, and I think our mission is still laudable after 60+ years. I adore my non-management colleagues and love the energy they bring to work. One of my bosses and several of the managers are fantasticI hope they remain connections for life."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"The Council is an awesome place to work, for a short time. My advice is to be clear about your objectives: if you want to meet some cool people and break into the nonprofit world, this is a great place to do that. If you're looking for upward mobility, seek alternative opportunities."

What don't you like about working at WORLD AFFAIRS COUNCIL?

"Being a non-manager at the Council feels restrictive. There is almost no room for upward mobility because we are a small organization (basically, there are 2-4 rungs on our ladder, usually 2 within a department). That could be solved by channeling the motivation of the junior staff, but instead it feels like the junior staff have a low ceilingonce you learn to crawl and then walk, you bump your head and eventually start looking for an exit. It's thrilling to work with so many young, talented, intelligent people...and it's depressing to see them all leave, inevitably, within 1-2 years."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"I would focus on bringing out the best in the staff, both individually and through creative teamwork. The energy, ambition, and raw talent of our employees is one of our greatest assets, but it's also the most under-utilized/under-appreciated. The management team is either stretched too thin or resting too comfortably in mediocrity/pessimism to really forge a new path. We could be a really innovative organization if we had a leader channeling the energy, ambition, and talent of our employees into real projects."
