Consular Officer
in Dulles, VA

"Wonderful!"

What do you like about working at United States Department of State?

"Working in foreign missions for the US State Department has allowed me to honor and serve my country outside a military career. I am the front runner of diplomacy, and a diplomatic career has allowed me to garnish and implore the views of our great nation to other countries. It has also allowed me and my family to cherish and meet people from other cultures. The kids get the best education money can buy and the embassy atmosphere is usually great."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"If you do not believe in the good work the USG does by helping other countries develope and does not care submerging yourself into other cultures, then re-think about applying for these jobs. Otherwise, have fun!"

What don't you like about working at United States Department of State?

"In general, working with DOS has been great. But some of the assignments can have a toll, such as debilitating crime and medical services. Also, some assignments might be considered unaccompanied, meaning your family will need to stay behind for the full duration of the tour. This can play havok on your spouse and children."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Training, training, and more training. DOS is now doing a great job fostering and mentoring new junior officers with making the proper transition into foreign service life. This was not the case for me before, and I was the recipient of being thrown to the dogs and start working at my new tour. Things have since changed and DOS is now requiring new guidelines to teaching and mentoring, which has been very successful at improving morale."
